Officials declare six-month moratorium
on building of new projects in Boracay

ILOILO CITY – Local officials governing Boracay Island have finally implemented a moratorium on new construction projects, five months after the Department of Environment and Natural Resources had issued the moratorium call.

Mayor Ciceron Cawaling of Malay town, where Boracay is located, issued a memorandum dated January 2, 2008 implementing a resolution of the municipal council declaring a six-month moratorium on the issuance of permits for new construction projects.

The moratorium covers January 2 to July 2, 2007, according to municipal councilor Rowen Aguirre, chair of the council's committee on laws and regulations.

‘Reduce departing
OFWs' fee to P200'

Senator Aquilino Pimentel Jr. called on the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration to reduce the departing overseas Filipino workers' membership fee to only P200, a press release from his office said.

The OWWA has recently reduced the membership fee for migrant workers by P225 – from P1,275 to P1,050.

Although he hailed the OWWA decision to cut down the fee, Pimentel said P1,050 fee is still a huge amount.
