Molestation suspect
escapes from detention

A rape suspect who escaped from a police station in Bacolod City Friday is now the subject of a manhunt.

Police Station 10 commander, Inspector Adonis Rosales, said they are searching for Avelino Romanillos, 20, of Purok Roseville, Brgy. Handumanan, in the city, who ran away from the precinct at about 7:30 p.m. on January 4.

Rosales said Romanillos, who was detained on January 1 for a sexual-molestation complaint, had asked to go to the comfort room when he fled.

The Bacolod City Police Office Women and Children's Concerns Desk has jurisdiction over the case but Romanillos was detained at Police Station 10, because the incident happened within its area and the WCCD has no detention cell, Rosales said.

Rosales said he had just arrived from Manila at that time.

He said Romanillos apparently saw the chance to escape when PO1 Rene Labating, who was the jailer in charge, had to pacify a group of people who were reporting an incident.

Other officers on duty that night had left the station to respond to another case when the suspect fled, Rosales added.

He said they are now coordinating with the nine other BCPO stations in the searching for Romanillos.

His family, including his uncle who is a member of the Bago police station, have vowed to turn him in if they see him, Rosales said.

He also said that he has asked Labating and his team leader, SPO1 Willie Yap, to submit their reports on the incident, and they will be investigated.

BCPO director, Senior Supt. Ronilo Quebrar, meanwhile, said, that Labating and Yap could face administrative cases and undergo a summary hearing, but they can continue rendering service to the station.*PP
