City mulling reduction of
pedicabs, CLO says

The Dumaguete Regulatory and Franchising Board will decide whether or not to maintain the number of tricycles plying the city streets or reduce their number by canceling more than a hundred franchises.

City legal officer Neil Ray Lagahit yesterday confirmed the dropping and cancellation the more 100 tricycle franchises in Dumaguete due to their failure to renew for two consecutive years.

This is provided under an amendatory ordinance passed by the Sangguniang Panlungsod early last year, he said.

Child labor program lauded

The Canadian International Development Agency lauded the Saint Maria Goretti Foundation Inc. for implementing child labor programs in Negros Oriental last year, CIDA senior program officer Myrna Jarillas said yesterday.

The foundation is a non-government organization managed by Msgr. Merlin Logronio who spearheaded the project called “Community Approach Towards the Elimination of Worst Form of Child Labor in Negros Oriental”.

It received a total allocation of P2.3 million for the project.

Silliman to host youth summit

About 300 youth leaders from around the country will gather at Silliman University in Dumaguete City for the “National Millennium Development Goals Summit for Young Filipino Leaders,” on Thursday, a Silliman press release said.

The theme of the gathering is “B.I.L.I.B. Young Leaders: Stand Up, Move, Lead!” will highlight an acronym which stands for UNYAP principle of Believe, Innovate, Lead, Inspire and Build.

Organized by the United Nations Youth Association of the Philippines, the four-day summit is an official event of the United Nations Resident Coordinator of the Philippines, the International STAND UP Campaign against Global Poverty, and the Taking it Global International, the press release said.
