City mulling reduction of
pedicabs, CLO says
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The Dumaguete Regulatory and Franchising Board will decide whether or not to maintain the number of tricycles plying the city streets or reduce their number by canceling more than a hundred franchises.

City legal officer Neil Ray Lagahit yesterday confirmed the dropping and cancellation the more 100 tricycle franchises in Dumaguete due to their failure to renew for two consecutive years.

This is provided under an amendatory ordinance passed by the Sangguniang Panlungsod early last year, he said.

Lagahit said the Board will convene late this month to decide on the issue. He clarified that previous franchise holders will not be allowed to re-apply for the cancelled franchises.

The dropping of the franchises will mean loss of revenues for the city, but this will, at the same time, decongest traffic with reduced number of tricycles plying the city streets, Lagahit said.

Meanwhile Mayor Rodolfo Gonzalez Jr. of Valencia , Negros Oriental will give his State of the Municipality Address at 9 a.m. today during the special session of the Sangguniang Bayan, at the municipal gymnasium.

Gonzalez is the first local chief executive to deliver his SOMA this year.

He said his SOMA will highlight the accomplishments and plan of development in the years ahead of his administration.*JG
