Drugs conviction rate
up 60 percent in 2007

The Regional Trial Court Branch 30, the special drugs court in Dumaguete City , has reported a conviction rate of 60 percent for the year 2007, records showed yesterday.

The court presided over by Judge Rafael Crescencio Tan Jr. said yesterday it has convicted 29 drug dealers, nine of them sentenced to suffer life imprisonment, 17 were to serve 14 years jail term in the maximum, and the rest to serve less than one year and committed to the government rehabilitation center.

Tan said the court has only 211 pending cases, including those newly filed, as of December 31, 2007.

Mabinay wins Lutong Garbo title

The entry from Mabinay town won the title in the 2 nd Lutong Garbo Competition held recently as part of the yearly Buglasan Festival celebration of Negros Oriental.

Mabinay presented the Chevon Mojo recipe, or goat's meat cooked in plenty of spices and sauces.

The Suso, Buko, Gabi or SBG Express from the municipality of Santa Catalina won second place. “Suso” or snail found in fresh water was cooked in coconut milk and vegetable. Meanwhile, winning third place was the steamed chicken in vegetable and mushroom of the municipality of Valencia .

Lotto outlet operates
without permit: CLO

A lotto outlet in Dumaguete City was found operating without a mayor's permit, City Legal Officer Neil Ray Lagahit disclosed yesterday.

Lagahit said they conducted a test-buy and discovered that the lotto outlet was illegally operating in a bicycle parts store, at the corner of Cervantes and Colon streets, Dumaguete.

He said the CLO will send closure order notices to the outlet and will confiscate the lotto machines.
