| The five Outstanding Oriental Negrense awardees were recognized at rites held Sunday at the Sidlakang Negros grounds in Piapi, Dumaguete City .
Gov. Emilio Macias II and Vice Gov. Jose Baldado gave the citations to the awardees who included a farmer, civic leader, educator, legislator, and an appellate justice.
They are Ruperto Cadayday for agriculture; Monserrat Gonzales Magbanua, community service, Dr. Henry Sojor, education; former Rep. Herminio Teves, government service; and Justice Fortunato Vailoces for law.
Their conferment was finalized during the regular session of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan on Dec. 20, 2007 through Resolution No. 972 authored by Board Member Lea Ga Bromo.
Cadayday has been a farmer throughout his life, earning for him several awards from various organizations. Magbanua served as the first chapter administrator of the Philippine National Red Cross, president of the Dumaguete Lionettes Club, and president of the Negros Oriental-Siquijor Council of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines , among others.
Sojor, former provincial Board Member, is an international speaker and currently president of the Negros Oriental State University .
Teves was congressman of the third district of Negros Oriental from 1964 to 2007, while Justice Vailoces was former Associate Justice of the Court of Appeals from 1990 to 1993.
The giving of awards was in line with this year's Buglasan Festival which commemorates the 118 th anniversary of the province.*RG
