| Asian Tour star Juvic Pagunsan, who hails from Bacolod City, shot a three-under-par 69 yesterday to zoom ahead by four strokes with 18 holes left in the PGAP Unity Cup at challenging Valley Golf in Antipolo.
Pagunsan gunned down a total of five birdies and had two bogeys in a 35-34 round for a 207 aggregate, a clear four shots ahead of new second placer Elmer Salvador, who also turned in a 69 to be in solo second.
The 29-year-old ex-caddy from Binitin in Bacolod has turned in under-par scores in each of the first three rounds over the tree-lined layout which was the site of the 1981 Southeast Asian Games and three RP Opens.
He is now in line to win a second straight local title after a swashbuckling conquest of the rich The Country Club Invitational field last month.
Seven strokes behind in third spot was Antonio Lascuna, also a former winner of the TCC, who assembled a 71 before Ruben Sasutil and Orlan Sumcad at 215 after submitting a 72 and 74, respectively.
Carito Villaroman, the former two-time world junior champion who held the first round lead and was just a stroke back at the start of the day, bowed out of it all after shooting himself in the foot with an 81.
The 36-year-old Villaroman had a double bogey and a triple bogey in the back nine before dropping a shot on the 18th to now be in a tie for ninth at 220 with Mars Pucay (71), Randy Garalde (70) and Cookie La’O.
La’O turned in the day’s best score, a 67 littered by six birdies.
The others in the Top 10 were former RP Open winner Robert Pactolerin, who cracked par for the first time with a 71 for 216, good for a tie with Ibarra Quiachon, who churned out a 74.
Former amateur ace Marvin Dumandan also struggled and dropped to solo eighth place at 219 after submitting a 74.*
