Septuagenarian killed in
Talisay road mishap

Septuagenarian Lilia Parreño was the fifth fatality in another traffic accident yesterday – this time in Talisay City, Negros Occidental, police records show.

Parreño, 76, was buying bread by a parked Isuzu Carry vehicle along the highway of Brgy. Zone 16, Talisay City, when she was sideswiped by a 10-wheeler dump truck driven by Wennie Diploma, police said.

Supt. Joseph Thomas Martir, Talisay police chief, said Diploma claimed that the brake of his  vehicle malfunctioned after he tried to avoid hitting another cargo truck that he had been following.

Witnesses, however, said Diploma was racing with another cargo truck at about 5:30 a.m. yesterday, when the accident happened.

Martir said Parreño died on the spot, while Diploma later surrendered to the Talisay City Police Station, where he is now detained.

Four other persons, including a Filipino missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, were also killed, while 15 others were  hurt in separate vehicular and traffic accidents in Moises Padilla and Valladolid, on Feb. 23 and 26.*GPB
