Fervently pray, faithful
urged amid national crises

BY MARICAR ARANAS

Amid various controversies hounding the country, the Roman Catholic faithful in Negros Oriental are challenged to offer their fervent prayers, fast and abstain, and to do works of mercy.

Parish priest Fr. Julius Heruela of the Dumaguete Cathedral said the country has been lambasted  with so much  controversy involving high- ranking officials in the government.

The country  seems to  forget  about the  idea  of being  a  Christian  nation, he said.

Heruela said Dumaguete Bishop John Du has always emphasized that  the  church  stands  for  what  is   true  and to dwell  on  the  truth.

He  added that the  church  is  very  careful   in making   comments  on  the national broadband network-ZTE deal, especially  with  the   support  of    the  Roman  Catholic  congregation in Manila to run after those involved.

He hopes that the Senate investigation would be justified and that the violators would be punished, Heruela said.

The  church   encourages   all  Christians  to  offer  prayer, sacrifice  and  penance for  this  season  of Lent.

Too much chaos in our country today is an indication that believers have slowly lost their faith in prayer, he stressed.

He is thankful that in the Diocese of Dumaguete, the majority of Christian believers still observe sacrifice during the Lenten season.*MA
