The Lopue’s Table Tennis Association is embarking on a year-round training program aimed at finding talents to form the Negros Occidental squad that will compete in national age-group tournaments.

LOPTTA president Leonito Lopue said the program, scheduled to start Saturday, will cover players ages 8 to 17 years-old. The training session will start from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.

“We want to develop future stars in the sport,” Lopue added.

VIOLATION REDUCES CANLUBANG’S ADVANTAGE

It’s the position they want to be in but Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club skipper Kokoy Locsin is far from satisfied.

Exploiting its knowledge of the course, Marapara posted 109 points yesterday and hung on to a precarious one-point lead in the Founders’ division of the 61st Philippine Airlines Interclub in Bacolod City.

Locsin, however, feels his team failed to make the most out of its home-course advantage.

Filipinos in 9-ball
tour start campaign

Rising pool star Joven Bustamante hopes to continue his surge to the top of billiards echelon when he competes in the opening leg of the 2008 Guinness 9-Ball Tour, which starts tomorrow (Feb.29) at the Taipei Gymnasium in Taiwan’s capital.

The 29-year-old Bustamante, along with former world champion Alex Pagulayan, was handpicked tour organizer, ESPN-Star Sports, as one of the Irish stout beer’s endorsers during the six-leg series of competitions featuring the finest in Asia.

He is currently ranked sixth in the world ranking by the World Pool-Billiard Association, just behind two other Filipinos in Dennis Orcollo (no.1) and former double world champion Ronnie Alcano (no.3).
