IN BAIS
‘Red light district’ hit

Bais dad opposes JAPEX oil exploration anew

The Bais City government is protesting the continued oil exploration by the Japan Exploration firm at the Tañon Strait, even as the 40-day extension granted to JAPEX has yet to expire.

Mayor Hector Villanueva said yesterday that he will continue to oppose the activity, and he may even seek an authority from the Sangguniang Panlungsod for the filing of a criminal complaint against agencies responsible for the oil exploration.

The mayor said he would not want to regret in the future if the oil exploration will destroy the tourism industry of Bais.

To date, Villanueva was told that out of the seven species of dolphins in the sea off Bais Bay, only two species have been spotted so far.

He, however, hoped that the dolphins will be back in March.

Meanwhile, the president of the Association of Cities and Towns of Character Philippines Inc. is opposed the idea of putting up a so-called “red light district” in Bais.

Villanueva said he would not welcome the establishment of night spots in Bais City  as long as he is the mayor.

Dumaguete City Mayor Agustin Perdices also said he is willing to join the association, although he is yet to receive an official invitation from Villanueva.*JG
