BBC thumps Talisay;
Davies, Amspec pull through

BY CEDELF TUPAS

After struggling in three of their first four games, BBC came out firing on all cylinders Sunday night, thumping Talisay, 101-86, to resuscitate its sagging bid in the Class A division of the 8th Tan Kek Pin Cup Memorial Basketball Tournament.

Joebert Pastias and Jojo Miravalles spearheaded the assault for the West Negros University-based squad with 18 and 14 points, respectively.

Together with Jeff Maningos, Miravalles got the ball rolling for BBC with 10 first-half points that helped them establish a 56-38 advantage at lemontime.

Already assured of a semifinal berth, Talisay offered little resistance with Bryan Alunan and Garson Junto finishing in double figures.

In contrast, BBC had five more players in double figures with Maningos, Eric Deloria, Joemarie Bayhon, White Delos Santos and Mark Bolivar combining for 53 points to typify their squad’s balanced offensive.

Talisay clinched the No. 2 slot behind undefeated World of Fun, which earlier secured the top spot after sweeping the elimination-round. BBC wound up at 2-3, the same record with Province of Negros Occidental and Probac.

In Class B action, Davies-Luis Paint banked on the brilliance of Ireneo Morales and Ryan Meneses to repulse Gentech Atlantic, 88-83, and finish second in Group 1.

With the win Davies earned a chance to take an automatic semis slot. It will contest the berth with KJ Fairmart-City Savings Bank tonight. Baciwa clashes with Head and Shoulders for the other semis berth.

The losers will be forced to survive the quarterfinal round, where it will meet the winners of the knockout matches between the top teams in groups 3 and 4.

Morales dropped 14 of his 22 points in a 35-point third quarter explosion by Davies, which turned a 32-41 deficit into a 67-58 lead. Meneses also poured all of his 12 points in the period.

Tata Cango, who sparked Gentech in the second period, tried to pull his team closer in the final quarter but lost steam with Morales and Kevin Relatos still providing scoring punch for Davies.

Cango finished with 24 points, while Yen Dolar and Johnyson Yu added 13 and 10, respectively for Gentech.

In another Class B match, five players, led by Frank Madrid and Boboy Gayares, scored in double digits as Amspec downed Panasonic, 100-88.

Madrid finished with 14 points, while Gayares, Ruan Dondoyano and Gino Hagad joined forces for 36 points. Pansonic was led by Antonio Rogacion with 24 and Bobil Alagaban with 18 points.

The win pushed Amspec to the top of group 3 and will face Sam's Gym for a place in the quarterfinals on Friday. Panasonic will face Café Breizh with another quarterfinal berth at stake.*CPT
