3 CENECO employees get awards

Three employees of the Central Negros Electric Cooperative Inc. were named Most Outstanding Employees for 2007 in a search held as part of the 33rd anniversary celebration of the cooperative held recently, a CENECO press release said.

Winners and their categories were Hernani Veniegas, accounting clerk (Rank and File Administrative Level); Oscar Lopez, equipment electrician (Rank and File Technical Level); and Marcy Alit, head – Consumer Services Section (Supervisory Level).

They received P5,000 each and a plaque of recognition. Sixteen nominees for the three categories vied for the awards. They were individually rated by a seven-member committee headed by the finance manager Ana Lisa Bentinganan, the press release said.

The Search is a yearly endeavor aimed at encouraging employees to improve their performance and enhance their capabilities, the press release said.

Meanwhile, 56 CENECO employees were also given due recognition as loyalty awardees. These employees worked with the electric cooperative for the past 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years. They received monetary incentives, loyalty plaques and token of appreciation, the press release added.*

PTA defends seal
IN BORACAY

ILOILO CITY – The Philippine Tourism Authority struck back at critics of  the controversial markings on a drainage system and other projects on Boracay Island, accusing them of diverting attention from the “real” issues on the island.

Resort owners and residents had criticized Barbers for having his name engraved along with the PTA seal on the sidewalks of Boracay's main road to mark the P140-million drainage system project. The marking is placed every 25 meters along a two-kilometer stretch from Barangays Balabag to Manoc-Manoc.

They said it was improper for a government official to place his name on a project funded by public funds.

In a statement, the PTA's Boracay Environmental and Infrastructure Project office, however, accused resort owners and some residents of violating sanitary and environmental regulations.

Agnes Bocar, BEIP project manager, said in the statement that commercial establishments and some uncooperative residents have been diverting the public's attention from the real matters at hand to avoid accountability for their non-compliance and violations.

She cited cases of illegal water connections and the wanton cutting of trees to give way to businesses.

“Everybody knows what to do but isn't doing it. What's worse is (they're) blaming everybody else except themselves,” Bocar said.

BEIP engineer Mimi del Rosario said in the same PTA statement that so many people are trying to complicate the situation.

The PTA said that since 2003, they have been providing most of the the infrastructure and facility needs of the island including the water and sewerage systems, the concreting of the road network and the ongoing drainage system project.

Barbers' name has been replaced with the PTA website address in some but not all of the markings after news reports came out.

But Barbers himself has denied that he had his name removed from the controversial markings and said he finds nothing wrong with having his name on the seal.

A resort owner said that while the controversy over the markings is not as big as other problems of Boracay, “It is still a legitimate issue because it involves the use of public funds.”*NPB
