Yang to spearhead
NOGCC campaign

INTERCLUB MEN’S EVENT BEGINS WEDNESDAY
BY CEDELF TUPAS

Reigning club champion Jae Woo Yang will spearhead Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club’s campaign in the founders division of the 61st Philippine Airlines Interclub men’s regular championship, which tees off tomorrow at the NOGCC and Bacolod Golf and Country Club.

Yang, whose title streak began in 2004, is expected to be backstopped by former club champions Francis Gaston, who finished third in individual play, while seeing action for Luisita in the seniors event, Jun-B Bantug, Chris Infante and Federico “Kokoy” Locsin III, who will be the playing captain.

Completing the roster are NOGCC director Ray Anthony Lim, jungolf standout Chepe Dulay, Jimmy Feliciano, Max Javelona, Jimmy Yusay and Gerardo De Leon.

The team is expected to exploit its familiarity of the par-70 course, which is one of two venues of the Interclub. The Bacolod Golf and Country Club serves as co-host.

While the Marapara squad is bracing for a tough battle in the founders division, three-peat seeking Canlubang Golf and Country Club is creating the loudest buzz in the championship division and the Laguna-based squad has tapped the services of Negrense Joey Huerva to bolster its drive of matching Luisita’s feat in 1993.

The Sugar Barons won their third consecutive championship division title in the seniors’ division Sunday.

Canlubang is also seeking a record 15th men’s crown in the tournament that PAL launched in 1948.

Aside from Luisita, standing in Canlubang’s way is the Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club, whose line-up also includes a former NOGCC regular in Justin Limjap, also a former national jungolf champion.

Limjap will be joined by         Gene Bondoc, Tonton Asistio, Jun Jun Plana, Anthony Fernando, Mikko Yee, Miggy Yee, Chuchie Hung, Benjie Sarmiento and Il Jun Chun

Bannering the Sugar Barons are Jonel Ababa, Rufino Bayron, Mark Fernando, Jess Balaban, Mario Labajo, Joseph Labajo, Paul Echavez, Sonny Boy Bialan and Peter Villahe.

The tournament is supported by platinum sponsors Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, GE Aviation, MTV Philippines and Solar Sports. The major backers are Action Asia, Business Mirror, Crossover, PACSPORTS and Royal Caribbean. Fortune Tobacco, GECAS, MasterCard, People Asia and RMN are the corporate sponsors with Bombo Radyo, Callaway Golf, Century Park Hotel, Lufthansa Technik and Patio Pacific Boracay as other backers.*CPT
