| The Food for School Program of the Department of Education has been implemented in 22 cities and municipalities in Negros Oriental, provincial manager Gil Ibarra of the National Food Authority said.
The NFA and the Department of Social Welfare and Development is helping the DepEd in undertaking the program, which is aimed at encouraging children to go to school regularly, by giving them one kilo of rice everyday.
Ibarra said the first two recipient local government units were the towns of Amlan and San Jose. The program will be implemented in additional 20 LGUs, except Dumaguete City, Valencia and Sibulan.
A total of 30,690 sacks of NFA rice will be distributed to recipient elementary and pre-school children, he added.
The province has 602 elementary schools and 6,088 pre-schools. An estimated total of 37,755 Grade 1 and 24,596 pre-school children will be receiving a kilo of NFA rice daily, Ibarra said.
The grains agency is also negotiating with LGU’s to help in the delivery of rice to the schools, especially those located in the hinterland barangays.
Measures will be taken to ensure the program is implemented properly, Ibarra assured.*MA
