13 vying for Miss Teen
Western Visayas crown

Thirteen young ladies from different schools in Negros Occidental are vying for the crown of Miss Teen Philippines Western Visayas 2008 to be held on March 15, at 5 p.m. at Robinsons Place in Bacolod City.

In a press conference and the candidates’ photo-video shoot held Saturday at Sunburst Bay Resort in Silay City, Negros Occidental, pageant organizers said top two winners will represent the region, along with the winner from Iloilo, in the Miss Teen Philippines international pageant in Davao on May 31.

Jo Briones of the organizing committee said the activities of the candidates will include a community outreach program in the cities of Silay and Cadiz.

The contestants are also scheduled to join a team from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in a clean-up activity to heighten public awareness on the importance of clean surroundings, Briones said.

This year’s winner will receive P5,000 in cash, bouquet, sash and trophy, an all-expense-paid trip to Davao City, domestic travel package worth P50,000, gift packs and certificates from sponsors and a chance to win P100,000 and a three-week international educational tour package either in London, Paris or Tokyo, she said.

Vying for the Miss Teen Philippines Western Visayas title are Sarah Monica Esguerra, Lindzy Tolones, Maxine Galapon, Ma. Regina Meñez, Estila Parduano, Kazumi Mami Sakuma, Katherine Vasquez, Cindy Tang, Vena Santillan, Lianne Fernandez, Angela Mae Geanga, Georgia Mae Balagosa, and Mary Car Malunes.*NAB

NOHS launches
alumni search

The search for the outstanding and distinguished alumni of the Negros Occidental High School in Bacolod City is now ongoing, a press release from the NOHS Alumni Association Inc. through its public relations officer, Thelma Imutan, said.

The outstanding alumni award is for a graduate who has achieved national fame in his line of endeavor, while the distinguished alumni award is for achievers who contributed much to the community, region, and advanced his profession in the interest of nation-building.

Service awards will also be given to alumni, teachers and other individuals, the press release said.

Nominations must be submitted not later than March 15,  and can be made by coordinating with Joving Divinagracia at Tel. No. 434-7771, the press release added.*

USLS wins
I –Debate tournament

The University of St. La Salle Integrated School debating team was declared grand champion of the I-Debate Challenge (the 2nd Bacolod Inter-School Debate Tournament), held recently at the Social Hall,  of the Old Provincial Capitol Building, Bacolod City, a press release from USLS said.

St. Scholastica’s Academy backed out of the grand finals. The debate was supposed to revolve on the issue, “Is globalization a threat to our culture?”

The USLS debating team is composed of Jonathan James Cortes, Tomas Gerardo Araneta and Cara Henares, and is coached by Jonathan Davila. At awarding rites at USLS, Cortes was also awarded Best Debater and Best Speaker, the press release said.

Five schools participated in the debate hosted by Ralph Sarmiento and aired live over Sunshine Channel 14.  Teams from St. John’s Institute and La Consolacion College Main were eliminated at the preliminary rounds held in September 2007.

 University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, SSA and USLS entered the semi-finals held in November last year, the press release added.*
