| The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department will hold a training course on Mangrove Ecology, Taxonomy and Community Structure on April 15 to 20 at the AQD’s Tigbauan Main Station in Tigbauan, Iloilo and in Ibajay, Aklan, a press release from SEAFDEC said.
The training course, which will be undertaken in cooperation with Rebuilding Resilience of Coastal Populations and Aquatic Resources, aims to provide the participants with technical knowledge and skills to identify and characterize mangrove species and select appropriate species for replanting.
It will consist of lectures on mangrove biology and ecology, taxonomy, and community structures with corresponding field work and laboratory calculations.
All field work will be held in Ibajay, where healthy and highly diverse mangroves are present. Moreover, nearby Kalibo town has the best man-made mangrove plantation in the country, the press release said.
For foreign participants, training fee is $450 per person inclusive of registration fee, training materials, honoria of lecturers, and transportation and travel to and from Ibajay. Local participants can avail of special training fee of P5,000. Participants must cover expenses on lodging and meals, and international and domestic airfares.
SEAFDEC is a regional treaty organization composed of 11 member countries, including the Southeast Asian Nations and Japan.
RESCOPAR is a mainly Wageningen University funded program focusing on Rebuilding Resilience of Coastal Populations and Aquatic Resources through pluridisciplinary research on the interaction between fisheries, biodiversity, aquaculture, and sustainable livelihood options in coastal zones of Southeast Asia, the press release added.
