An P18-million fund has been allotted to Western Visayas for the implementation of the recently-launched Workers Income Augmentation Program or WINAP aimed to enhance the income-earning capacities of low-income workers, Labor Regional Director Aida Estabillo said.
Through the program, also called "Dagdag-Kabuhayan para sa Manggagawa," minimum wage earners and other low-income workers in private establishments will be assisted in setting up livelihood projects and building capabilities to provide for their families without leaving their current jobs.
In Western Visayas, Estabillo said the P18 million will be divided at P1 million each for the 18 congressional districts in the region.


‘Kabalikat’ partners launch
second farmers training
The second batch of farmers training under the “Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan” Project for backyard vegetable growing of the Shoe Mart Foundation, Negros Economic Development Foundation and Harbest Agribusiness Corp., was launched Friday at a demo farm in Brgy. Handumanan, Bacolod City.
In May, the project partners also tapped about 100 farmers in Negros Occidental to undergo a weekly hands-on training in organic farming from May to August.
The farmers were sponsored by the SM Foundation, together with NEDF that provided a 5,000-square meter land for the training. Harbest Agribusiness, headed by its president Arsenio Barcelona, invited agriculturists to conduct the trainings.


Instruction course on
mangroves slated
The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department will hold a training course on Mangrove Ecology, Taxonomy and Community Structure on April 15 to 20 at the AQD’s Tigbauan Main Station in Tigbauan, Iloilo and in Ibajay, Aklan, a press release from SEAFDEC said.
The training course, which will be undertaken in cooperation with Rebuilding Resilience of Coastal Populations and Aquatic Resources, aims to provide the participants with technical knowledge and skills to identify and characterize mangrove species and select appropriate species for replanting.
