pro-admin rallies

Dumaguete City Mayor Agustin Perdices said he will neither organize nor join any counter-move hatched by political allies of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to show that the embattled president enjoys strong support from local government units.

Perdices said he heard “indirectly” that some allies of the president are asking local officials to organize a counter demonstration on Monday, simultaneous with a similar activity spearheaded by the opposition and critics of Arroyo.

The mayor said he does not like the idea of having the anti-Arroyo forces and her supporters clash or engage in confrontation.

Shipping liner creates oil spills in city port

A minor oil spill at the city port was reported by the Environment and Natural Resources Office in Dumaguete and the Philippine Coast Guard, who, however, said they could not yet pinpoint who are responsible for it.

The report came as several passengers and cargo ships made calls at the port, including the navy ship BRP Benguet that docked at the pier, to unload one battalion of army troops for deployment in southern Negros Oriental.

Officials of BRP Benguet denied having made an illegal discharge of waste oil to the sea when asked by ENRO chief Rolly Clamonte.

The Metro Dumaguete Peace and Order Council has approved the installation of police outposts in the barangays of the city, during its regular monthly meeting held Tuesday, at  the St. Catherine  of Alexandria Parish Church convent.

The council also approved the proposed Memorandum of Agreement with the Negros Oriental State University and  the  Metro Dumaguete Peace and Order Council.

The  MOA  will enable the  PNP Crime  Laboratory  personnel to utilize  the Crime Laboratory  of  the Criminology Department  of NORSU, which has a more sophisticated equipment for  investigation.
