| The University Leadership Council of Silliman University in Dumaguete City has gathered close to 500 signatures in its campaign calling on citizens and those in government to “act according to the dictates of one’s conscience,” a press release from the school said.
The SU Justice and Peace Center is also organizing a “Prayer Rally and Vigil for Truth Telling and Call for Accountability” at 4:30 p.m. at the Silliman University Church.
The “Statement of Concern” was circulated because of the revelations of Rodolfo Lozada Jr., former president of the Philippine Forest Corporation, about anomalies involving the aborted national broadband network deal between the ZTE of China, and the Philippine government.
“While the University and its constituency seek to uphold the rule of law, we call on all concerned to adhere to what is enshrined in the Philippine constitution that ‘public office is a public trust’ and to act according to the dictates of one’s conscience,” the ULC said in the statement.
It added that citizens must always require accountability from government leaders…“and for those in government whose integrity may have been sullied to relinquish office immediately in order to protect the sanctity of the same.”
“As a conscience center and a moral agent, Silliman University cannot allow the erosion and total disregard of the tenets of transparency and morality in national governance to go unnoticed,” the statement stressed.
The ULC members also expressed their common frustration over the state of the country.
“We are simply disgusted and utterly disappointed in the state of our national affairs at this time, which is a far cry from our expectations of what the Filipino people deserve,” they said.*
