| The Department of Science and Technology-Provincial Science and Technology Center in Siquijor conducted a technology training recently on Furniture and Handicraft Production Using Mixed Media, at the Pajermo Furniture Shop, Larena Siquijor.
It was held in coordination with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Council and the Department of Trade and Industry.
Provincial director Mario de la Peña of the PSTC said the training is new to the furniture sector in the island, because this is a mixture of wood, steel or any other indigenous materials like bamboo, vines, coco shells, fibers and other materials.
Resource speakers were Ramil Quiapo of the Cebu Furniture Industries Foundation, Inc. and Marcial Roma, Jr. of Don Bosco.
Quiapo said furniture production using mixed media can demand high prices, because of its artistic design and appearance specially if it is well finished.
Siquijor producers, he added, are not behind Cebu in terms of wood furniture products but only few processors in the island utilize kiln dried lumber, which are the main criteria of buyers of furniture products.
The training is part of the government effort to accelerate the growth of small-scale enterprises and boost the government's anti-poverty and anti-hunger programs, the DOST said.*RG
