| Shipping liner creates oil spills in city port
A minor oil spill at the city port was reported by the Environment and Natural Resources Office in Dumaguete and the Philippine Coast Guard, who, however, said they could not yet pinpoint who are responsible for it.
The report came as several passengers and cargo ships made calls at the port, including the navy ship BRP Benguet that docked at the pier, to unload one battalion of army troops for deployment in southern Negros Oriental.
Officials of BRP Benguet denied having made an illegal discharge of waste oil to the sea when asked by ENRO chief Rolly Clamonte.
Aside from the navy ship, several cargo vessels were noted off the coast of Dumaguete, reports reaching the ENRO and PCG said.
Coast Guard commander Robert Patrimonio said his office will send an Inspection Apprehension Report, as well as water samplings, to their national office on the incident.
Clamonte admitted that his office has no expertise in situations like this, but assured the public that the illegal discharge could only be one barrel of waste oil from ships docking at the port.*JG
