Tax target not attained
BY ROMY AMARADO

Except for real property tax, the Negros Oriental government did much better in the collection of revenues last year compared to 2006, provincial treasurer Danilo Mendez said.

The Provincial Treasurer’s Office collected more than 100 percent of its P2 million target on transport tax, as well as on sand and gravel business, Mendez said.

From taxes on delivery vans, the P540,000 target was also attained, and the biggest revenue last year, was from hospital fees amounting to P80 million, he added.

District hospitals and the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital collected the tax. Mendez said although these are government hospitals, they charge some services, like the use of private rooms at the NOPH.

Mendez, however, said tax collected from real properties was only about P68 million, a decrease from its P90 million target for 2007, which he attributed to the failure of many municipalities to perform well.*RA
