House to hear Kepco contract
Controversy in Bacolod soon
BY NANETTE GUADALQUIVER

The House committee on energy, headed by Pampanga Rep. Mikey Arroyo, will hold a public hearing on the controversial power sales contract between the Central Negros Electric Cooperative and Korean Electric Power Corp.-Salcon Power Corp. in Bacolod City .

The date, however, has not been scheduled yet.

Rep. Jose Carlos Lacson (Neg. Occ., 3rd district), whose jurisdiction covers two cities and a town served by CENECO, said the House Committee on Good Government has already held an initial hearing on the issue.

The committee, headed by Rep. Pedro Romulado (Camiguin), has decided, however, to turn over the matter to the committee on energy.

The power sales contract, signed by KSPC and CENECO officials in Bacolod in July 16 last year, stipulates that KSPC will supply CENECO with power from its soon-to-be-built 200-megawatt coal-fired power plants in Naga, Cebu.

Lacson had earlier said the contract is contrary to government policy to encourage the generation of renewable energy because the agreement provides that the power to be supplied to CENECO consumers will come from coal energy.*NLG
