Bizman featured in magazine

Benedict John Tanpinco Uy, poster boy of the next generation business leaders of Bacolod City , is on the cover of the latest issue of Lifestyles Bacolod magazine, now out in selected outlets, a press release from the publication said.

Uy, chairman and president of the company that runs Planta Hotel and Residences, is also its chef.

In the issue is a travel story on the Red Sands of Saudi, written by George Pontino Jr. who used to write locally. Pontino is now working as a graphic artist in a Riyadh-based publishing company that does Arabic versions of Disney and fashion magazines, the press release said.

For the first time, artist Bamboo Tonogbanua writes, and he does a piece on fashion designer Lourdes Lipa. Tonogbanua also styled the pictorial for the Lipa piece, the press release added.*

Cable channel to air live
Academy Awards

Velvet, SKYCable's latest addition to its line-up, brings the grand 80 th Academy Awards live via satellite on Monday, Feb. 25 th , at 9 a.m. Manila time, a press release from SKYCable said.

This year's Academy Awards will be hosted by multi-awarded comedian and host Jon Stewart. Actors and actresses on the red carpet in their designer gowns and suits, at the event to be held at Kodak Theatre, the press release said.

Velvet also features breaking news, talk shows, entertainment buzz, comedy, drama, reality TV and hit movies, the press release added.*

Alumni donate
fund to purchase chairs

The Blue and Gold Alumni Association Inc. Board of Directors led by Mateo Valenzuela, donated recently P136,000 to Fr. Demetrio Peñascoza, for the purchase of 100 upholstered chairs of the President's Hall, University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos , in Bacolod City , a UNO-R press release said.

Other projects undertaken by the association were the support for the “Walk of Fame”; tiling of the main lobby; and the provision of steel benches for the UNO-R park, the press release added.*

Newborn screening
ordinance passed

IN KABANKALAN

An ordinance was passed recently by the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Kabankalan for the conduct of newborn screening in the city, a Kabankalan press release said.

Authored by Councilor Anecito Villaluz Jr., the ordinance is aimed at ensuring that every newborn has access to screening for certain heritable conditions, like mental retardation, serious health complications or death, if left undetected and untreated.

It will also establish and integrate a sustainable newborn screening system within the public health delivery system and to ensure that parents recognize their responsibility in promoting their child's right to health and full development, the press release said.

The ordinance underwent a public hearing on Feb. 13 at the city hall function hall and attended by barangay officials, health personnel, teachers, representatives of non-government organizations and residents, the press release added.*
