| Negros Oriental is a recipient of the Water and Sanitation Hygiene Project under the Country Program for Children funded by the United Nations International Children's Fund.
Provincial Planning and Development officer, Joy Gongob, said they have identified 10 disparity barangays selected and evaluated by the CPC-6 technical working group
The recipients of the WASH project are barangays Hinakpan in Guihulngan City ; Sac-sac – Manjuyod; Luca – Tanjay City ; Bios – Amlan; Sitio Kalinawan – Brgy. Enrique Villanueva, Sibulan; East Balabag – Valencia; Sac-sac – Bacong; Malungcay Daco – Dauin; Salag – Siaton; and Sitio Doming – Barangay Calantucan, Bayawan City.
Gongob said the project is designed for schools in barangays desperately needing water and sanitation facilities like comfort rooms and wash areas.
They are now on the preparation stage of the project since they are still waiting for the Waterworks Engineer of UNICEF, who will assess the needs of recipient schools.
The project has a funding cost of P 800,000 but recently the UNICEF office has informed the PPDO of Negros Oriental of an additional budget.
Gongob said the project is expected to be implemented before the end of this month.
Meanwhile, Gongob refused to comment on the political problem of some WASH recipient areas. One of the project components is the assistance from the local government through its engineering office.
Gongob said project areas with political problem might be cancelled since UNICEF obliged the LGU's participation .
She clarified that the final decision will still be coming from the UNICEF office in Manila.*MA
