Talisay cagers thwart
Probac in TKP Cup
BY CEDELF TUPAS

Joemel Garrido fired 20 points as Talisay overcame Probac, 91-82, Wednesday night to stay unbeaten in three outings in the Class A division of the 8 th Tan Kek Pin Memorial Basketball Cup at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School.

Garrido's impressive performance that included an 18-point explosion in the final period was just half of the story, though.

The Probac cagers had no one to blame but themselves as they had to forfeit the match after exceeding the number of ex-varsity players (schoolyear 2001-2006).

With four minutes left, ex Colegio San Agustin Bacolod player Butchoy Solinap came in for former La Salle stalwart Peewee Demonteverde and became the fourth ex-varsity player on the court for Probac. Tournament rules only allow three ex-varsity players on court at the same time for each team.

Garrido waxed hot at the start of the fourth period but it was Ryan Hugnatan's triple that gave Talisay a 72-71 lead. Hugnatan finished with 12 points, while Christian Antiporda and Bryan Alunan added 10 apiece.

Probac, which dropped to 2-2, was led by Chad Paez with 16 points. Demonteverde and Andy Angudong added 12 each.

In Class B action, BACIWA thumped Gentech Atlantic, 98-86, in Group 1 with Ryan Agena and JP Yulo leading the way with 25 and 17 points, respectively.

In Group 4, Café Breizh outlasted Sam's Gym, 97-93, in overtime. Justin Baldonado pumped in 10 of his 30 points in the extra session, while Jobert Celestial added 21.

Sam's, which led, 58-70, heading into the fourth period, was led by Justin De Jesus and David lacson with 14 each.

In group 2, Glenn Perez ad Jaypee Balderas posted 21 and 18 points, respectively to lead Rexona Men's Power past Air Power Services, 113-100.

The duo's output offset Stephen Barneso's 37-point performance.

The games resume today with Marco Metals battling Breizh, followed by the Class A game between Probac and Bapro.*CPT
