| Southeast Asian Games hammer throw king Arniel Ferrera of Cauayan town, Negros Occidental will get an additional P100,000 for setting a new record in last year's biennial Games in Nakhon Ratchasima , Thailand .
This was disclosed yesterday by the Philippine Sports Commissioner Eric Loretizo, who said the reward is apart from the incentives for the gold-silver-bronze medalists under Republic Act 9064 authored by then Sen. Robert Jaworski.
The incentive is pursuant to BR 102-2002 , which was the basis of a similar bonanza to long distance ace Eduardo Buenavista for setting a new SEA Games mark during the 21st SEA Games.
Ferrera rewrote the Games hammer throw record to 60.98 meters in winning the gold medal. Also expected to gain additional windfall are Henry Dagmil, who improved on the long jump mark to 7.87 meters and Fil-Am swimmers Daniel Coakley and James Walsh.
Coakley swam the 50-meter freestyle in a new record 22.80, while Walsh took the gold medal in the 200-meter butterfly in 2:00.84, another new standard.
Loretizo, meanwhile, said that Cuban boxing coaches Juan Enrique Styner Tisert and Dago Berto Scot, who were recruited to help the country's bid to earn more Olympic slots in the coming Beijing Olympic Games this August, will be flying in Wednesday.
“The Cubans' arrival will signal the joint efforts of the PSC and ABAP for additional Olympic berths in the last qualifying tournament in Kazakhstan next month,” he said.
He also announced that the board of commissioners, has approved financial support for Dumaguete-born recurve archer Mark Javier, one of the 12 athletes, who have so far made the trip to Beijing .
Javier will be provided with a five-month training stint in Cairo after the board approved a $19, 963.55 as requested by the National Archery Association of the Philippines .
Also approved was a request for the participation of compound archers Amaya Paz, Jennifer Chan, Abbigail Tindugan and Marvin Cordero in the First Asian Grand
Prix set Feb. 25 to March 1 in Bangkok .
La Carlota City-born hurdler Sheena Atilano is also a recipient of funding support for her training in Temecula , California from February to June. She is preparing for Olympic qualifying competitions.
Also extended financial assistance is the 48-day honing up stint of six Filipino judokas – Binalbagab-born John Baylon, Gilbert Ramirez, Tomihiko Hoshina, Nancy Quillotes, Helen Dawa and Estie Gay Liwanen from March 4 to April 20 in Japan .
After their Japan training, Baylon and company are taking part in the last of a series of Olympic qualifying tournament scheduled April 23-28 in Jeju , South Korea . *CPT
