Aqua culture project
eyed in Bais City
BY MARICAR ARANAS

The Bais City Agriculture Office will launch an aqua-culture project on the second week of March this year, with Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap as the guest of honor, Mayor Hector Villanueva said.

Villanueva said the facility is for giant clam culture and crabs, as well as for distribution of fish solar drier.

Almost 4,000 clams will be distributed to fishermen from 13 coastal barangays of Bais. Recipients will be raising mud crabs which have high demand in restaurants and bulk buyers from Negros Occidental and Cebu , Villanueva said.

Raising crabs does not demand too much effort because they can easily survive in mangrove areas of the city, the mayor said, adding that female crabs demand higher prizes in the market.

Villanueva said that, through the aqua–culture project, fishermen will be encouraged to protect the marine environment as their source of livelihood.*MA
