Province forms committee
for climate change summit
BY MARICAR ARANAS

The Negros Oriental government will conduct a climate change summit to increase awareness among Negrenses on the threat of global warming, Gov. Emilio Macias II said.

He said he met recently with Bayawan City Mayor German Saraña who suggested the holding of an island-wide forum.

A lecture called “Is the Philippines Ready for Climate Change?” was held recently at Silliman University , Dumaguete and attended by Macias, Vice Gov. Jose Baldado, Saraña, SU president Dr. Ben Malayang III, and environmentalist Dr. Angel Alcala.

Organizers said a committee to be created to handle the summit will be composed of representatives from the academe, private sector, local government units, and the media.

Participant will be from local government units, private sector and students.

Baldado said the presentations of Dr. Angel Alcala and Dr. Hilconida Calumpong, on the impact of climate change, were very challenging and should be made public.

Meanwhile, soul singer Nina has also vowed to campaign against climate change.

At a press conference in Dumaguete City , she said this is her contribution as an artist, adding that the advocacy on environmental protection and conservation should be a concern of everybody.

Nina was invited by the Foundation University Alumni Association Inc. for their pre-Valentine concert held at the Gov. Lamberto Macias Sports Complex Tuesday.

She also expressed disappointment over the continued piracy in the country, stressing that this kills legitimate producers and young aspiring singers.*MA
