The Department of Finance in Central Visayas lauded the Dumaguete City government for its steady increase in tax collection for the last three years.

Officer-in-charge Renee Empaces of the DoF in Region 7 said Dumaguete is 0.20 points short of ranking no. 1 in terms of real property collections in the entire region, for the third quarter last year.

The city registered 78.05 percent tax collection in 2005, 94.99 percent in 2006 and 99.74 percent in 2007, records reveal.

City treasurer Cristina Merced said Dumaguete had a 99.74 percent real property tax collection last year, 0.20 points short of Talisay in Cebu with 99.94 percent efficiency rating, despite the shortfall of P3.4 million in real property collection.

To increase its efficiency, the City Treasurer's Office was advised to conduct a comprehensive tax collection campaign in every barangay, and to intensify other collection strategies to enhance its performance ratings.*JG
