nabbed for ‘Swertres'

A kagawad of Barangay Cadawinonan, Dumaguete City , and her husband were arrested in a raid on the illegal gambling “Swertres” Thursday night, the police said.

Operatives of the 705 th Provincial Mobile Group led by Chief Insp. Julius Muñez swooped down on the house of the son of kagawad Mercuria Alviola and her husband, Agustin, an alleged coordinator of “Swertres.”

The Alviolas are residents of the Cadawinonan Housing Project, Dumaguete.

The three persons arrested for the recent death of PO3 Danilo Malones in Cauayan, Negros Occidental, were tagged by the military as members of the New People's Army Special Partisan Unit who were on a test mission.

Lt. Col. Romeo Basco, 61 st Infantry Battalion commander, yesterday said the arrested suspects, who recently graduated from a course of Special Partisan Unit operations of the New People's Army, had been ordered by Reniel Cellon, alias Ka Kumpol, secretary of the Komiteng Larangan-Southwest, to liquidate Malones.

Senior Supt. Rosendo Franco, provincial police director of Negros Occidental, however, said they are still investigating the affiliations of the arrested suspects, if any.

Woman killed in road mishap

An octogenarian died when she was hit by a motorcycle about 8:30 a.m. Thursday in Brgy. Poblacion 4, Siaton, Negros Oriental, the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office said.

Traffic investigators identified the victim as Francisca Gajano, 82, married, jobless, of Poblacion 4, and the motorcycle driver as Lemuel Cadiente, 22, single, a farmer, of Barangay Mantiquil, Siaton.

Gajano was walking at the right side of the road and was bumped by the motorcycle that had no plate number when she crossed the highway, investigation showed.
