Hatchery training
course set in Iloilo

Applications are now open for participation in the first in-country marine fish hatchery training course for the Philippines to be held in Iloilo by the Network of Aquaculture Centers in Asia-Pacific and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department, a press release from SEAFDEC/AQD said.

Deadline for submission of application is on March 17, 2008

The training course, fully funded by the Australia Centre for International Agriculture Research, will allow transfer of marine fish production technologies developed in the Philippines and Indonesia to Philippine hatchery operators to assist them to diversify their production into marine fish species, allowing small scale hatchery operators to switch between species in accordance to market demands, the press release said.

175 Botikas now

Negros Occidental has established 175 Botika ng Barangay outlets under the government's Half-Price Medicine program, according to the Department of Health.

The province has the third biggest number of BnBs in Western Visayas , with 1,040 outlets. Iloilo has 560; Aklan, 190; Antique, 62; Capiz, 27; and Guimaras, 26.

Dr. Alberto Teruel, BnB coordinator of the DOH 6, said more outlets will be set up this year under the program aimed to ensure availability and accessibility of affordable and quality essential drugs for the poor in hard to reach areas.
