Copper wire thefts increase
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Copper wire thieves in Dumaguete cannibalized several sodium light posts along Flores Avenue , Barangay Piapi and other barangays in the city, Erasto Crispo, who is in charge of city street lighting, said Friday.

Crispo urged junkyards to report stolen electrical wiring materials brought to them by unknown persons.

He said individuals who have background in cutting or splicing live electrical connections carry out the thefts. He also theorized that wire thieves cut the underground sodium electrical wiring connections during daytime, and pulled them out at night.

In other barangays, wire thieves took the copper wire connections of sodium lights and replaced them with telephone wires. Crispo said they suspect people who have access to these materials are behind the thefts.

He also lamented the continued defiance of junkyard operators of their promise to cooperate, as they still continue to buy stolen materials.*JG
