GOLDEN GLOVES
Pahanocoy, Pta. Taytay
boxers eye most crowns
BY CEDELF TUPAS

Barangays Pahanocoy and Punta Taytay are sending the most number of fighters in the finals of the maiden staging of the Golden Gloves Monico Cup Inter-Barangay Amateur Boxing Tournament at SM City in Bacolod on Sunday.

Pahanocoy will have five boxers eyeing titles in the final day of competitions with Ronel Parcon and Junrey Millegin already assuring the barangay with one title, after forging a gold medal showdown in the 42 kg. division.

Another Pahanocoy bet going for gold is Alvin Sibugan, who clashes with Ronelo Gasapo of Barangay 10 in the 30 kgs. division. The fight comes after the 28 kg. showdown between another Pahanocoy bet, Jorin Labordo, and Barangay 10's John Bombite.

Also hoping to give Pahanocoy a crown is Ruben Sibugan, who collides with E.R. Gonzales of Singcang-Airport in the 36 kg. finals.

With Punta Taytay sending four of its boxers in the finals, the potential tie-breaker in the quest for overall supremacy could turn out to be the duel between Alejandro Jamili and Remus Orcada of Pahanocoy in the 45 kg.

Like Pahanocoy, Punta Taytay is also assured of at least one title as Genesis Servania takes on brother Jake Servania in the 51 kg. category in the second to the last bout of the program that begins at 2 p.m.

Another interesting sidelight is the match between the Servania brothers' younger sibling, Roland, who will open the action as he takes on Sum-ag's Rafael Nobleza for the 26 kg. title.

Also gunning for a crown is Punta Taytay's Randy Cantilla, who battles Mandalagan's Rafael Sueno in the 39 kg. finals.

Handumanan also has a sure-gold winner as Allen Oro and Aljun Oro rub mitts in the finals of the 34 kg. division. The other finalists are Sum-ag's Jefferson Delgado, who will face Estefania's Rodney Boy Ducay in the 32 kg., and James Bedico of Mansilingan, who goes up against Jeffrey Manale for the gold in the 48 kg. category.

The finals is expected to be attended by 2005 Asian Women's Boxing Champion Mitchel Martinez and Philippine Sports Commissioner Eric Loretizo.*CPT
