Painting exhibit opens

The BacoLaodiat Festival 2008, in cooperation with SM City Bacolod, featured the Chinese Painting Exhibit called “Welcoming Spring” as one of the official events of the Chinese New Year celebration in the city, the press release from organizers said.

It opened with a ribbon-cutting led by main Chinese artist-professor Tsai Shui-Yuin (Arsenia Lim) and Bacolod first lady Elsa Leonardia, Wednesday, and will run until tomorrow at the Northwing Event Centre of the mall. It was followed by a Chinese painting demonstration by Lim.

Lim first learned Chinese painting under Filipino-Chinese painter Yang Keng-Tang, and studied painting and calligraphy while a History major at the National Taiwan University , the press release said.

She then learned various arts techniques. Prof. Tsai held her first solo exhibition in the Philippines in 1967, has had about seven other solo shows, and has participated in over a hundred group exhibits here and abroad.

Other featured artists are her students Mimi Cu, Celia Chao, Mary Uy, Liliy Ty, Sofia Chen, Linda Au Ong, Teodora Ng, Tan Bee Hua, Bertha Sy, Liliy Ban Hui Uy, Kathleen Lin, Willie Pieh, Jeanie Chua, Santa Tan, Molly Yap, and Rosita Tam, the press release added.*

DSWD gives P2.8M to Neg.Occ.

Negros Occidental received P2.8 million for the implementation of Core Shelter Assistance Program under the Calamity Assistance Rehabilitation Efforts Program, a press release from the Department of Social Welfare and Development said.

The fund was released directly to local government units of Cauayan and Kabankalan City at P1.4 million each.

Twenty units of core shelters will be constructed with an individual cost of P70,000 in project sites in Hilamonan in Kabankalan City and Talacdan in Cauayan.

The checks from DSWD Region 6 office were received by Mayor Pedro Zayco of Kabankalan and Mayor John Ray Tabujara of Cauayan, recently, with Liane Garcia, provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer of Negros Occidental.

Also present at the turnover in Cauayan were Vice Mayor Jerry Tabujara; former DSWD Regional Director and Consultant for the Office of President for Western Visayas Zenaida Mabugat; and other local officials, a press release added.*

A first aid station was set up at the Dinagyang grand parade in Iloilo City , recently, by SMART and the Philippine National Red Cross, a press release from SMART said.

It was manned by Red Cross volunteers and SMART employee-volunteers. The community service initiative is part of the Smart Employees Responding as Volunteers in the Community and Environment , or SERVICE of the telecommunications firm.

The festival is held every fourth Sunday of January to honor the holy image Sto. Niño, the press release added.*
