Disaster preparedness confab held
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The 1st Orientation on the Identification of Hazard Prone Areas in Negros Oriental has led local government units to mitigate measures against disasters.

The forum was held recently at the Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Complex in Dumaguete City , and was participated in by 25 Sangguniang Bayan chairpersons of the Committee on Environment Disaster Preparedness officers in the province.

Representatives from Philippine National Oil Company, National Power Corporation, National Irrigation Administration, and the Department of Public Works and Highways were also present.

The orientation was facilitated by Board Member Lea Bromo who chairs the Committee on Environment of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, and who said the province should be prepared for measures against possible disasters by identifying the hazard-prone areas.

She said the presentation of Community Environment Natural Resources Officer Charlie Fabre who reported that the entire province is identified as having flood-prone areas alarmed her.

Fabre also said there are areas that have signs of fault line from the areas in Canlaon City going down to the southern portion of the province and this shows big cracks, and landslides. The environment department will conduct further study to determine if the said fault line is active or not, she said.

During the orientation, some LGUs agreed to allocate funds for the study of the fault line.

Fabre said the budget of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources is not enough to conduct a comprehensive study of the fault line.*JG
