Heightened security measures will be in place in restaurants, bars, and other leisure establishments in the city as the BacoLaodiat Festival kicks off today, the Bacolod police said yesterday.

Bacolod City Police Office director, Senior Supt. Ronilo Quebrar, said they will also deploy more uniformed and civilian-clothed personnel at restaurants to prevent possible bar fights.

Pubs and cafes at Lacson Street and at the Goldenfields Commercial Complex will be manned by the officers, especially from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. , he said because aside from riots among revelers, thefts and robberies could happen there.

Robber nabbed

An eatery helper wanted for robbery charges was arrested by policemen in Bacolod City yesterday, the police said.

Jerald Tungol, 18, of Purok Bayanihan, Brgy. Villamonte, in Bacolod , was nabbed by Police Station 4 officers led PO2 Ely de la Llave on the strength of an arrest warrant for robbery issued by Regional Trial Court Branch 46 Judge George Patriarca, at about 10:45 p.m. yesterday.

Tungol, a helper in a barbecue shop at C.L. Montelibano Avenue , in Bacolod , is among the suspects in break-ins at the Homesite area before his arrest, De la Llave said.

The complainants who identified him included the employees of Felix Hagad whose house at Capitol Ville Subdivision, Brgy. Villamonte, in Bacolod , was allegedly burglarized by Tungol and his companions on June 23 last year, police reports said.

Tungol, however, claimed, the officers did not show him the arrest warrant and manhandled him when he was apprehended.

He admitted joining a group in previous burglaries but denied that he was among those who broke into Hagad's residence. He also said he has stopped engaging in illegal activities because he wanted to renew his life.

Tungol's guardian, a woman who only wanted to be identified as “Mighty”, said she can attest that he, indeed wants to stop his illegal activities but added she cannot do anything now, but let him answer for his past mistakes.*PP
