Meningo ‘victim' recovering

A 4-month-old baby girl suspected of being infected with the meningococcemia virus Tuesday is reportedly responding positively to treatment at the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital , in Dumaguete City .

The girl from Barangay Pal-ew, Tanjay City , whose name is being withheld, was admitted Sunday evening. This was confirmed by NOPH chief of clinic, Dr. Felix Sy and attending physician Dr. Santiago Tiongson, who said that, based on the signs and symptoms of the girl, they are almost sure the case is that of meningococcemia.

Health officials, however, said blood culture is still needed, even if skin tests showed negative results.

Tiongson said that after two days, the baby's condition has significantly improved.

To further confirm the blood samples of the baby, it will be brought to the Research Institute of Tropical Medicines in Manila , Sy pointed out.

Sy said this is not the first time that a suspected meningococcemia case was brought to the NOPH.

Following standard operating procedures, the baby was placed in an isolation room, and several persons exposed to her including health personnel, have taken precautionary medicines.*JG
