Three squads representing the Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports, Cultural and Educational Association plunge into action today in the Western Visayas Private Schools Athletic Association Sports Meet in Iloilo City .

Opening NOPSSCEA's campaign is the men's football squad that will take on lightweight Antique at 7 a.m. at the Iloilo Sports Complex pitch. The athletics team will be in action at the ISC tracks shortly after the football match, while swimming takes centerstage at the nearby Olympic pool.

“Our teams are ready. I expect them to fare better than last year,” NOPSSCEA Sports Task Force chairman Roger Banzuela said in a telephone interview last night. “They are well-prepared”.

Recarte Tiauson emerged as the top winner of the 2nd JB Astorga Individual Chess Tournament at the Ramon B. Lacson National Memorial High School and Burgie's Bakeshop and Restaurant in Talisay City , Negros Occidental.

Also topping their respective divisions were Renz Lloyd Andador in category B and Sophia Deanne Binas in category C.

Placing second behind Tiauson in category A was Richard Sase, who was trailed by Eduardo Songco, Jonathan Divino and Warlito Dymosoco, respectively.

Southern Ladies
golfest opens Feb. 6

The 45 th Southern Ladies Tournament tees off Feb. 6 with about 90 women players seeing action at the Bacolod Golf and Country Club in Binitin , Murcia .

Tournament organizers Jhay Montelibano and Susan Yulo yesterday said that the Philippine teamare participating in the tourney with Chihiro Ikeda leading team.

Ikeda, fresh from her stirring come-from-behind victory in the DHL-WWW Express National Amateur Golf Championships is favored to win the contest.
