| Two Bacolod City universities bagged top national awards over the weekend.
A University of Saint La Salle team was the national winner of the 4th Sweep Innovation and Excellence Awards, while a University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos student won the PalaECEpan Quiz Bee in Cebu City Saturday, Maria Jane Paredes, Smart public affairs manager for the Visayas and Mindanao , said.
The theme of the Sweep Innovation and Excellence Awards held at the SM Cebu Trade Hall Feb. 1 and 2 was “Going Wireless for Disaster Preparedness”.
The USLS innovation entry that bested 58 others from around the country was on a “Geo Specific Public Warning System Using Cell Broadcasting”, Edgar Altarejos Jr., chairman of the USLS Electronics Communication Engineering Department, said.
The USLS fourth year ECE students on the winning team are Delman Alagao – team leader, and Francis Xavier Parcon, John Kimwell Laluma, Paul Edward Alvarez and Mark Paolo Salada, members.
The team won P500,000 as first prize and a grant of P500,000 will be given to USLS, Paredes said.
Meanwhile, PalaECEpan Quiz Bee champion was Edward Warren Torres, a 5th year ECE student at UNO-R whose mentor is engineer Christopher Alunan, she said.
Torres won P40,000 and a cellular phone from Smart, Paredes said.
The PalaECEpan competition tested the intellectual prowess of the smartest engineering students from SWEEP partner schools, she said.
The annual SWEEP Innovation and Excellence Awards is organized by Smart Communications Inc. as part of the company's Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program (SWEEP), an industry-academe partnership program that helps raise the level of technology and engineering education in the country, she added.*CPG
