| Filipino Z Gorres and Australian Vic Darchinyan fought to a controversial split draw in their 12-round International Boxing Federation super flyweight eliminator bout at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu City .
Thai Montol Suiryachi saw it 113-112 for Gorres; Cebuano judge Jonathan Davis had it 114-112 for Darchinyan; while Australian Cec Perkins had it 113-113.
But it was the dubious decisions of referee Lance Revill of New Zealand that made the bout even more controversial.
Revill's first howler came in the opening-round as he judged Gorres' slip a knockdown, prompting fans to throw mineral water bottles at the ring.
“Darchinyan is a dirty fighter. I'm willing to fight him again in a rematch anytime and anywhere,” Gorres said after the match. “I could have won if not for the first round knockdown.”
Gorres sent Darchinyan to the canvass with a thunderous right hook to the head. Darchinyan survived the count.
Revill added another dubious call to his resume in the fifth round, this time in Gorres' favor, as he also ruled a Darchinyan slip a knockdown.
Revill's inaction to a head butt from Darchinyan in the sixth round also drew the ire of Gorres and the crowd.
Darchinyan registered his second knockdown in Round 9 with a powerful right to the head.
Darchinyan's promoter Gary Shaw, who complained about the three knockdowns the referee didn't call, said Revill should be banned from boxing for life.*
