tournament draws big field

About 1,000 enthusiasts divided into 132 teams of eight are seeing action in the inaugural NOVA Inter-College P.E. Park Volley Festival at the University of St. La Salle football field in Bacolod City .

Sixty eight teams will be in action in the men's division, while 64 squads vie for the crown in the women's tournament of the festival that is part of the Negros Occidental Volleyball Association's 30 th anniversary.

Among the schools entered in the festival are USLS, University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos , West Negros College , Bago City College , Bacolod City College , ABE, AMA Computer College , Lasaltech, Kabankalan Catholic College , STI, Carlos Hilado Memorial State College and Technological University of the Philippines-Visayas, NOVA president Roger Banzuela, also the USLS varsity sports director, said yesterday.

Banzuela said park volleyball is a new recreational and competitive event promoted by the International Volleyball Federation through the Philippine Volleyball Federation. The court measures 8x16 meters, the same size of a beach volleyball play area and players will be engaged in auto-refereeing.

The opening ceremony will be keynoted by Philippine Sports commissioner Eric Loretizo, who will be joined by Banzuela, Bro. Ray Suplido and Billy Lopue in doing the ceremonial serve.*CPT
