| Hoping to replicate if not surpass its final four appearance in the World Series four years ago, the Seniors softball team from Domingo Lacson National High School in Bacolod City that represents the Philippines goes for a semifinal berth today against Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Game time is set at 5:30 .m. in Lower Sussex, Delaware.
The Asia-Pacific champions from Bacolod will report to the field today against the Southwest champs bearing a two-match winning run -- prevailing over US-South, 10-1, and Germany, 3-1 – after dropping their first assignment against US-Central, 1-10.
Bannered by a team from Indiana District, US-Central topped the Pool A bracket with 4-0 record, followed by the Philippines with a 2-1 slate and US-Southwest at 1-2.
After missing the first three games due to glitches in her flight schedule, RP starting pitcher Annalie Benjamin is expected to join the team today. Despite her absence, the team did good with pitcher Julie Marie Muyco holding her ground against Germany and Virginia.
Muyco managed to raise her game and steer the Filipinos to a two-game win that did not fail to get the attention of their rivals.
Meanwhile, the Philippine team in the Major League World Series beginning today has issued an appeal to move its game against lightweight Europe to a later date, citing its late arrival in Portland, Oregon.
The team from Bacolod City, backed by the Philippine Sports Commission, was scheduled to leave for Portland last night.
Gloria Rivera, the leader of the Filipino community in Portland, made the appeal to tournament organizer Sue Seaver in behalf of the RP team.
Media representatives joining the delegation to Portland said the case was referred by Rivera to Seaver who in turn, will raise the appeal to World Series organizers based in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
Two more Philippine teams will compete in the Junior League World Series in Kirkland, Washington and in the Big League event in Kalamazoo, Michigan beginning August 11.
International Little League of Manila will also have a team each in the Junior League and Senior League baseball World Series tournaments in Taylor, Michigan and Bangor, Maine.*NAB
