TF formed against
illegal slaughtering

The Bacolod City Government has formed the Post-Abattoir Inspection Task Force through the City Veterinary Office to campaign against the proliferation of illegal slaughtering activities, the Mayor’s Office said yesterday.

The Task Force will monitor and inspect public markets, supermarkets, cold storage, meat processing plants and other similar establishments, and entry points to the city as well as identified barangays where illegal slaughtering exists.

It was created under Executive Order No 137 and based on Ordinance No. 459.

The Task Force aims to maintain the meat-borne-disease-free status of the city; increase the average volume of slaughter to 300 heads of hogs and 50 heads of large cattle per day by the end of 2008; and sustain its operation the whole year round.

Any person, firm or corporation caught illegally slaughtering and/or in the possession of “hot meat” will be imprisoned from six months to one year and fined P50,000.

The ordinance empowers the mayor to cancel or revoke business permits of those firms caught violating the law.

The city veterinarian, through the task force and other enforcement agents, is also empowered to confiscate hot meat and/or carcasses of any illegally slaughtered animals, including all slaughtering paraphernalia and impound any vehicle used, pending the termination of the case from proper court.*
