Sugar Regulatory Administrator Rafael Coscolluela who left for Hawaii Saturday, said he will lobby for an increase in the Philippines share of the US sugar quota, with the country expected to have a 25-year record sugar production high for crop year 2008-2009.
Coscolluela said he would announce the expected production figure for the new crop year atthe Philippine Sugar Technologists Association convention in Cebu City on Aug. 13.
Meanwhile, Coscolluela said he is lobbying for a biggerRP shareof the US sugar quota, because it is be better for the Philippines to sell its excess sugar to the US market that offers better prices than the world market.
Coscolluela said he would lobby at the American Sugar Alliance’s International Sweetener Symposium in Hawaii set Aug. 1 to 6, which theme will be“Global Sugar Policiesin Transition.”
The current share of the Philippines in the US sugar quota is 137,000 metric tons and he is looking for a possible additional 27,000 MT, Coscolluela said.
Coscolluela said that in two to three years time, when the Philippines ethanol production begins, the country will not have to deal with excess sugar production.*CPG
