| The Bacolod City Veterinary Office is conducting rabies vaccination in the barangays to control the spread of rabies in the city.
City Veterinarian Dr. Adelo Daroy yesterday said that, from January to July this year, three dogs were recorded positive for rabies. Last year there were only two, he said.
However, there was one death due to rabies recorded last year but none this year, he said. He attributed this to the continuing education campaign and rabies vaccination being conducted by the CVO, as well as, the apprehension of stray dogs.
Daroy said the ultimate solution of rabies is responsible pet ownership. Pet owners should know how to keep their dogs within their premises and have them vaccinated or immunized every year, he said.
The CVO has scheduled rabies vaccination in Brgy. Tangub on Monday and Mansilingan from Aug. 5-8, Taculing - August 11-14, Alijis - Aug. 18-19, Singcang-Airport - Aug. 20-22, Vista Alegre - Aug. 25-26 and Brgys. 1 and 2 - Aug. 27.
Meanwhile, records from the City Health Office showed that 999 dog bites were recorded from January to June 2007 compared to 1,196 this year, covering the same period.
Rabies Coordinator Gloria Parreño said the victims of dog bites are usually minors from 15 years old and below, and usually involved are pet dogs. She said this is because children think that pet dogs are toys.
Daroy said they also continue to hold symposiums on responsible pet ownership in public elementary and high schools in Bacolod.*CGS
