IN CANDAU-AY
City mulling measures
vs. garbage dilemma

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Officials of Barangay Candau-ay in Dumaguete City and neighboring areas expressed alarm yesterday over the volume of garbage dumped everyday in the city’s ecological park.

They also said the situation worsened when the heavy equipment assigned in the area conked out like what happened Thursday.

Garbage collectors now have to dump tons of garbage at the road that has become an eyesore to the public, as well as a health hazard to neighboring communities especially the children.

Barangay captain Danny Alcancia and the council members have reported this to the City Mayor’s Office.  He said this has happened twice this year when the equipment was incapacitated.

Councilor Antonio Remollo, who responded to the report, said the swelling of the garbage suggested that while the bulldozer is being repaired, the city should rent another bulldozer to remove the garbage from the road.

Remollo also called on the City Engineer’s Office to fast-track the repair of the heavy equipment and for the environment and natural resources office to implement mitigating measures like spraying the garbage site with anti-oxidants.

Sangguniang Kabataan federation president, Lathena Gene Duran, of Barangay Candau-ay said the city government should seriously consider the relocation of the dumpsite, which is prohibited by law.

The ecological park was developed during the time of his grandfather, the late former Vice Mayor Gene Duran, and has become a national awardee.*JG
