Tay Tung beats
SJI in Batang-PBA tilt
BY NIDA BUENAFE

Tay Tung High School beat St. John’s Institute in the championship game of the Batang PBA-Bacolod summer basketball tournament at the West Negros University gym yesterday with TTHS Kirell Montalbo declared Most Valuable Player.

The contest was one of the side events in the PBA All-Star Weekend that included the Shooting Stars competition where Bacolod City Councilor Greg Gasataya, teaming up with Barangay Ginebra’s Ronald Tubid and sports analyst and former pro player Jason Webb, won with a record time of 1:34.1.

In the Legends Three-Point Challenge, active shooters Ren-Ren Ritual, Dondon Hontiveros and John Arigo seized the lamplight from coach Boyet Fernandez, Boy Cabahug and Roehl Gomez, 49-45, to claim bragging rights in the rainbow territory against the retired players. Ritualo earlier dethroned Hontiveros as three point king.

Fernandez, who coached the South Team in the All-Star game, won the three-point shootout title in 2000 and 2001, while Gomez bagged the crown in 1997 and Cabahug in 1993.

It was the second straight time the active players defeated the legends after Hontiveros, Willie Miller and Gary David had a breakthrough win in this event last year in Baguio City against Fernandez, Ato Agustin and Pido Jarencio.

Meanwhile, led by Coca-Cola’s Ronjay Buenafe, the Rookies pulled the rug over the Sophomores in the other side events of the All-Star extravaganza.

Buenafe scored 25 points including a crucial endgame steal that helped the Rookies beat the Sophomores 101-97 in come-from-behind fashion Friday night.

It was the second straight win of the rookies who evened their rivalry with the Sophomores at 2-all.*NAB
