| Corn seeds were distributed to farmers in Negros Oriental, in Dumaguete City from the third congressional district office in Negros Oriental, through the Department of Agriculture.
Rep. Henry Pryde Teves (NegOr, 3rd district) said the idea of going into corn production to cover at least 200 hectares of land, came after his meeting with Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap and the Committee on Agriculture officials, recently.
Yap said the backbone of the livestock industry is corn, and that, he immediately made the decision to develop corn industry in the province, Teves added.
He said the corn seeds for 200 hectares will be for 160 hectares for yellow variety, and the rest for white corn. The seeds will be distributed to willing farmers in the district, he added.
He also said he will prioritize farmers who have undergone the Farmer Field School program, since they are equipped with knowledge on how to plant the hybrid corn.
The Rural Bank will offer a fertilizer loan to farmers for at least six sacks of fertilizer per hectare of corn, Teves said.
He added that the corn seeds will be bought at reasonable prices to benefit the farmers.*MA
